Additional Information
Italian Paolo Cian began his sailing carrier racing 5 years in the Optimist dinghy class winning the Cadet Italian Championship in 1978 and becoming a member of the Italian National Team.
Continuing in the double ended 420 dinghy winning several Italian Titles, and reaching 7th and 6th place in the World Championship in 1983 in the USA and in 1985 in Italy respectively.
He began racing in the 470 Olympic class in 1988, winning the Italian title in the same year and achieving international success. (top 3 ISAF ranking for two years) and finishing 2nd in the national trials for Barcelona 1996.
In 1998 began his olympic Soling campaign, where he started match racing, obtaining several excellent results including Bronze at the World Championships in the USA 1998 and 4th at the Pre-olympic Regatta in Sydney, becoming a member of the Italian Olympic Club. Unfortunatelly ending 2nd in the final trials for Sydney 2000.
As well as racing in Olympic classes and sports boats, Paolo kept improving his big boat experience competing in offshore events, including the Admiral’s Cup in 1999 at the helm of the Italian Sydney 40’.
Devoted to match racing since 2000, Paolo and his team reached excellent results worldwide being the first Italian to be consistently placed in the top 10 world ranking. Thanks to these outstanding results Paolo was chosen for the helm of the young Italian Team, Mascalzone Latino to challenge the Cup in 2003 in Auckland.
Straight after the elimination of Mascalzone notable was the proposal from Dennis Conner to join Team Stars and Stripes as helmsman of the B boat for the preparation of the quarter finals.
Thanks to the world ranking and his skill and experience in match racing, in March 2006 Paolo was asked to join the first ever South African Challenge, Team Shosholoza, as afterguard and Match Race coach.
He took the opportunity to confirm his talent in match racing, having the responsibility as presrtart helmsman and finally helming the boat for all the races during Act 13 and the Challenger series the Louis Vuitton Cup ending with a remarkable 7th place.
