Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia – 26 November 2011: While the skippers are battling it out for supremacy on the water at the Monsoon Cup, a group of local and international sportsmen of a different sort are fighting it out for the honours too.
In conjunction with the Monsoon Cup, multiple side events are taking place and today it’s all about the action on the water with a National Kayak Competition, National Long Boat Competition and Traditional Boat Competition. With over 520 participants coming from both overseas and locally, the waters of Kuala Terengganu will be teeming with action.
Responsible for organising the events, Dzulkafli Abbas said: “We’ve got people coming from all around to take place in these events during the Monsoon Cup. We could not be more delighted to be involved in the event as it’s really exciting for the participants to be out on the water alongside the world’s greatest sailors.”
A big part of the Monsoon Cup is the side events which aim to get locals involved in the week. Traditionally the monsoon season is a hard time for the locals however by having the final event of the World Match Racing Tour in town, it attracts people and brings in revenue to the area. The side events are a huge attraction and, alongside the Monsoon Cup itself, help ensure the hotels in the region are at 100% capacity throughout the event.
