Portimão’s Tourism Appeal Boosted by World Tour Teams

The World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) has brought 12 teams of 5 sailors as well as families, friends and fans to the fun and friendly Portimão which is fast becoming the beach holiday destination of choice for everyone who experiences its seductive nature.

Portimão’s most famous and distinctive feature is the beautiful scenery of its jagged and intensely coloured rocky coastline, along which, nestling amongst the cliffs, are many welcoming beaches of golden sand.

The varied supply of shops selling the all essential, havaianas and bikinis, mixed with ample water sport activities including; windsurfing, sailing, diving and deep sea sports fishing, make the municipality’s beaches even more valuable as highly attractive tourist treasures.

Luis Brito, Pitman for Alvaro Marinho (POR) Seth Sailing Team, loves racing in his home nation. “For me Portimão is the best City in Portugal and maybe the best in the World. It’s amazing to be on the beach all day with good weather and warm beautiful clear blue waters, it’s gorgeous here”.

The South coast of Portugal is also developing its stature for gastronomic delights with fresh fish year round. Portimão is also a ‘wine region’ credited with Portugal’s highest wine classification. This is celebrated every year with a wine festival right on the Praia da Rocha.

Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team won Portugal Match Cup last year and has enjoyed the move in venue to Portimão for 2010, “I wouldn’t mind moving here, it’s certainly nice”.

This is the 7th edition of the Portugal leg of the World Match Racing Tour and is made possible this year through Camara Municipal de Portimao, Turismo de Portugal, EDP, Yacht Club Marina de Portimão and the WMRT. This combined power of support provides a sustainable commitment to a quality match racing event which will continue for years to come.
