Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia – 26 November, 2011: The Monsoon Cup has this year helped the local hospital - Sultanah Nur Zahirah in Kuala Terengganu through organising a blood donation drive at the Monsoon Cup Race Village to provide blood for its patients and replenish the reserve of its blood bank.
Interested parties were required to register themselves and have a blood test conducted to determine their blood grouping. Following the test, a doctor was on hand to check the candidate’s blood pressure and counsel the potential donor on whether the person was fit or not to donate blood. Adults with a body weight of 45kg and below, and those above the age of 60 were deemed not eligible for donation.
Eligible blood donors were required to lie down for 10 minutes to facilitate the donation process and were given a drink afterwards to replenish their energy.
The hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Suhaimi Yusof, was hopeful that the blood donation drive would become an annual programme at the Monsoon Cup. He said, “Our target is to get around 50 to 100 people to donate blood. We are confident that our regular blood donors will come to support the event. And hopefully the organising staff of the Monsoon Cup will also lend their support.”
